Estimating Staffing Needs in the Setting of Pandemic Influenza

It is estimated that 16 million people perished in the conflict of World War One. As unimaginable as this total is, it was soon to be surpassed by the number of casualties who succumbed to the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918-1919. Worldwide, this virus infected one fifth of the population and claimed the lives of 50 million people. During the outbreak, the casualty rate was so great that the average US life expectancy dropped by 12 years. Though there have been other pandemic outbreaks of flu virus since, none yet have come close to equaling the lethality of the 1918 strain. However, on the horizon is the prospect that the H5N1 avian flu virus will mutate sufficiently to allow easy human-to human transmission.
